Watercolor on paper landscape painting of sheep at the edge of a forest, a small home in the distance across some ponds and lakes, signed at lower right corner by a talented Dutch immigrant to the United States, ADOLPH (also spelled ADOLF) VAN SPANJE (1868-1948). The artist is not widely listed at this time in art directories and online sites, but there is information about him on the net. He immigrated to the United States in 1893 to join a brother already in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and pursued an art career for a time, opening a studio in New York City (an April 1901 New York Times short article notes that a "young Hollander from Velp" was showing his artworks at a Fifth Avenue gallery). He married in Cleveland in 1901 and then settled into a prosperous life in the sand removal business in Michigan City, Indiana, residing along the shore of Lake Michigan for many decades. This watercolor measures 14 1/4" by 26" inside the mat, and 18 1/4" by 30" as framed. It is in good condition. Allow for reflections in a few images.
