Oil on canvasboard painting of a greatly simplified vase with flowers, unframed, 16" by 12", signed at lower right "Dieter" and bearing on the reverse the title "Spring Bouquet" and "W. D. ZANDER/25 EAST END AVE/N.Y N.Y 10028". This is a work, possibly circa 1970's or 1980's, by a long-lived gentleman with an extraordinary life history, who happens to also be a very talented artist. Zander was born in Germany in 1915, and educated in Switzerland. He was drafted in the German army during the war and was taken prisoner after seeing much action on a number of fronts. After the war he was involved in art reclamation and restitution efforts, regarding works found in Austrian salt mines. After the war Zander went on to become a prominent business executive and advisor to other executives at the highest corporate levels. According to information taken from his still active website, Zander was also quite active in New York social circles, and still found the time to be a most talented artist himself, influenced by the likes of Kokoschka, Nolde, Kirchner, Kandinsky, Macke, Marc, (the German Expressionists) and, perhaps most obviously, Nicolas de Stael. His work has been exhibited in New York City galleries, and currently is offered online in the $4,000 to $8,000 price range. Since I do not see auction records, I am offering this example much more reasonably. The work is in generally good condition with just a little paint loss showing as small green areas at right.
