Humorous and whimsical watercolor and ink drawing of seven Dutchmen--burghers--dozing in what appears to be a tavern room, their pipes still smoking, and flagons half drunk, while an outsider opens the door at right, discovering the unhappy and troubling scene, to his dismay. The drawing is signed by the artist at lower right corner "M HOF" and is dated there 1910. The scene could be German as well but I lean towards Holland because the print on the wall features windmills and the word "AMSTERDAM" at bottom. At first glance many would dismiss this as a print but I guarantee it to be an original hand drawn work. **The artist seems to have been very familiar with the artwork of English illustrator Cecil Aldin----compare.** Size is 7 1/2" by 13 3/4" (14" by 20" in old wood frame). The condition is excellent, the colors still vivid. I am unable to locate a listed artist for this name but will continue the search. This would make for a fine addition to a "man cave".
