Watercolor on paper painting of flaming autumnal trees including birch, and a distant mountain backdrop including white church steeple and village, signed at lower right "J. Crawford". The identity of the artist on this one is something of a mystery. I see there is a James Crawford (1832-) who apparently painted a scene in the New Hampshire Lakes District, and then there is James Crawford Thom, better known (1835-1898) who also painted in New England. This piece was purchased in eastern Maine, so the New Hampshire connection sounds logical. Regardless of authorship the work is beautifully executed and has a fine presence, and is in fine condition. The frame is later, maybe 1930's or so. The work is lightly taped at upper corners to the board.
