Etching on paper, titled "Saint-Gervais", from an edition of 50 signed and numbered plus a small number of artist proofs, pencil signed at lower left margin by the important artist EDGAR CHAHINE (1874-1947). Chahine also painted in oil and other media but it is for his unusual skill in etching that he is best remembered. Born in Vienna to Armenian parents, he studied from 1895 under Constant at the Academie Julian in Paris, furthering his art education with etching lessons from the great Delattre. In the first years of the new century Chahine began to attract notice for his skills, winning a number of prizes. It was at this time that he went to Venice, etching many of the familiar scenes there. After the Armenian Genocide of 1915 he was said to have been depressed. Due to a tragic studio fire in 1926 and an equally damaging flood in 1942, much of the artist's work was destroyed, accounting for its scarcity today. A catalogue raisonne of the graphic works by Tabanelli includes over 400 etchings. This example is in very good condition, with overall paper browning noted, consistent with its age. The print is taped along the margins to the mat on the reverse side.
