Neapolitan School "Grand Tour" era gouache painting on paper laid on a thin card, RATHER LARGE SIZE FOR THESE, at 19 1/2" by 36", the scene quite extensive with smoking Vesuvius at far left, and a number of figures in picturesque nineteenth century garb, the title "Napoli dal Campo" at lower left. Finely detailed distant buildings and trees complete the charming Italian scene. The work was framed behind glass so is in unusually excellent fresh condition, the exception being an apparently old crack in the paper, beginning at far right in the gray area and extending roughly horizontally into the image, for a total length of about six inches (ask for more images). It has been repaired, likely at the time the drawing was laid on this thin board. Though present it is not all that visible as it is lost in the details at normal viewing distance. The work when acquired by me was in a narrow, silvery color modern day frame, but that frame has loosened up and is coming apart at the corners; I think it safer to ship this, at least, outside the frame (though it's available to the purchaser at no extra charge). These Neapolitan School panoramic detailed views are popular favorites with decorators seeking the traditional look; at European auctions, some of the best have brought to five figures. This is a fine example and of impressive size; most that have appeared in the market are really rather small. SEE HUNDREDS OF OTHER WORKS OF ART NOW IN MY SHOP.
