Fine etching dated in the plate at upper left 1879, and pencil signed and dedicated at bottom "To Mr. St. Ferris, Respectfully Storck", by listed nineteenth American artist CARL STORCK of Philadelphia. (Stephen Ferris, 1835-1915, was himself a well-known Philadelphia-based painter and graphic artist, and a member of the Pennsylvania Academy. He had studied with Gerome and Mariano Fortuny in Europe; his wife was the sister of major American artists Edward and Thomas Moran---so, it is rather interesting, from an art history standpoint, that this little item was once owned by him). Storck was a painter and sculptor and graphic artist, but little biographical information seems to be available. He was a member of the Philadelphia Society of Etchers, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Philadelphia Sketch Club. This print measures 6 3/8" by 4 13/16" inside the mat (12 11/16" by 10 1/8" as framed in silver leaf). There are a number of discolored, brownish areas within the plate mark and outside of it, as shown. I am offering the print on behalf of a Philadelphia-area relative. The work will be shipped from there. Better images available upon request. SEE HUNDREDS OF OTHER WORKS OF ART NOW IN MY SHOP.
