Oil on board painting, 15 1/2" by 19", 22 1/2" by 26" in new gold framing, signed at lower left and dated there 1942 by artist E. L. SPEARMAN. The scene includes a barn, mill pond, figures on horseback, trees.......it is reminiscent of artists like Thomas Hart Benton, or perhaps Dale Nichols. Surprisingly there is little to be known about this mysterious "E. L. Spearman", who does not appear to be listed, at least under that name....I suspect, as is often the case when the work is fine but there is nothing to be known on the artist, that "E. L. Spearman" is actually someone listed and known, but that link cannot be established at this time. The painting has probably been cleaned in recent years, as it is in excellent condition indeed, for a painting made over 60 years ago. The frame is newish and very attractive. All in all this is a wall-ready painting that is very nicely crafted. If the artist name has slipped through the cracks, it will likely be recognized in years to come.
