Watercolor on heavy paper, 5 1/4" by 10", 10 1/4" by 14 1/2" in early 20th century dark laminated wood frame, signed at lower right in pencil "Della Vernon". DELLA VERNON (1876-1962) was an early California painter, the works of whom are considered scarce, according to the biography in the definitive Hughes Dictionary of California Artists. She was born in Iowa but was known to be in San Diego by 1901, and by 1909 she was in Oakland. The artist exhibited in those early years, and painted into mid century. She was for a time the wife of artist Thomas Bigelow Craig. Today the existing works are most commonly scenes of Yosemite, the High Sierra, or San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. This watercolor scene could be somewhere along the shore of San Francisco Bay. Colors are fresh and the painting is in excellent condition despite the lack of glass for protection. The frame is in poor condition, the wood veneer missing in several areas.
