This is an original ink wash on paper drawing, 12" by 17 1/2" (17 3/4" by 23" as framed shadow-box style behind Plexiglas), the image featuring a voluptuous nude woman and a bull that looks positively Chagall-like, signed at lower left corner by the highly important American twentieth century sculptor artist, REUBEN NAKIAN (1897-1986). The work, recently acquired from the dispersed estate of a prominent member of Los Angeles' Jewish community, bears a reverse label from the Landau/Alexander Gallery of Los Angeles, which gives the date of execution as 1978, and places the work within the "Europa Series". Nakian, of Armenian background, was said by the New York Times to be "one of the most distinguished American sculptors of the 20th century". Educated in New York starting in 1915 at the Independent School of Art, he went on to further education at the Robert Henri School, and the Art Students League where he apprenticed with Paul Manship and Gaston Lachaise. By 1926 Nakian had met the great Brancusi and assisted with the placement of his first one-man exhibition in the United States. During the 1930's he met and befriended the likes of Arshile Gorky and Willem de Kooning, and the 1940's saw him friendly with Marsden Hartley and Marcel Duchamp. During this period the artist's works were featured in numerous museum exhibitions. A 1966 exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art recognized his career, and by 1968 he was representing the United States at the Venice Biennale. In his long life, Nakian saw the rise of modernism, social realism and Abstract Expressionism, but he maintained much his own style despite the currents of the art world. He was still hard at work well into his 80's, in Stamford, Connecticut, creating sculpture, prints and drawings, often featuring themes relating to Greek and Roman mythology mixed with sexually oriented images including bulls, satyrs, and as one reviewer said "arcadian dalliances". This is a very fine drawing, in excellent condition, awaiting its new owner. ALLOW FOR REFLECTIONS IN SOME IMAGES. .
