For the collector of Judaica or Jewish art, here is an opportunity to acquire a fine impressionist painting of a Jewish rabbi or holy man, signed at lower left in both English and Hebrew, by the noted listed Jewish artist DAVID GILBOA (1910-1976). The work is a vignette study, impressionistically painted, with expressive brushstrokes. Condition of painting and frame is excellent save for an approximately 1 1/2" long vertical tear just below the beard. It can be repaired but from normal viewing distance looks almost like a scuff or scratch. Normally I don't recommend this but a buyer could use some dark brown watercolor to hide it further; or it could be professionally repaired, but you would not have to do so. The work measures 20" by 15" (25 1/2" by 20" as framed). Gilboa was a talented artist who painted landscapes and figures in oil and watercolor, and many prints have been distributed after the paintings. Works have appeared at auction but they do not seem to bring sums that the work merits. Not much seems to be known about Gilboa but he was certainly prolific, (and produced works of consistent quality)--and he was a member of the Safed art colony in northern Israel. **SEE TWO OTHER WORKS BY THE ARTIST IN MY SHOP**. .
