Original lithograph semi-abstract modern print, 20" by 17" inside the mat, 27 1/2" by 24" as framed, executed in the year 1976 and titled "La Fenetre" (The Window), by the well-known and important Lebanese-French artist CHAFIC ABBOUD (also spelled as "Shafik"). The print is contemporary and light, the image dominated by white, light blues and yellows. Abboud's works have reached nearly $400,000 at auction recently, as the legacy of artists like him, Paul Guiragossian and others from the Middle East and North Africa have been re-evaluated by the art world. Born in Lebanon of upper middle class parentage, he led a pleasant life in Beirut and the mountains before heading to Paris by age 21, arriving there shortly after World War II, with Abstract Expressionism about to become the leading movement. Through the late forties and early fifties he was associating with the ateliers of Metzinger, Andre Lhote, and Othon Friesz, while studying at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. The works of Pierre Bonnard, Roger Bissiere and Nicolas de Stael are said to have heavily influenced him. In 1959 Abboud exhibited in the first Biennale of Paris, and during the 1960's, he received recognition and prizes. He lived until 2004. Abboud is known for his complex abstract paintings but he also executed works on paper, a relative handful of prints, and some sculptural works. Today he is viewed as a member of the Ecole de Paris ("School of Paris"). The first monograph on the artist was published only recently, in 2006. His work is included in the collection of the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar, among many other institutional collections worldwide. This print has not yet been examined out of the frame but I would be happy to do so upon request. It appears clean and fresh, though the stained mat at top shows there has been moisture exposure at some point in time. Few lithographs by the artist have appeared in the marketplace. .
