JEAN-LOUIS FORAIN (1852-1931) plate signed etching "Le Bouquet" by well known French impressionist artist
Etching on apparently wove paper, 5" x 6 5/8" inside the mat, 13" by 13 1/4" framed, signed in the plate at upper left by the French impressionist JEAN-LOUIS FORAIN (1852-1931). The work is titled "Le Bouquet" and was originally created in 1876, though only a "small handful" of impressions were made at the time. Information I have developed on the net indicates that perhaps 25 other impressions, probably on Japan paper, were pulled in 1912 by Pellet. "Several decades" later, the plates were steel faced and further impressions were made. This example is likely one of those later impressions. The work is very attractive and undeniably Parisian and French in feeling. Forain was a contemporary of the likes of Manet, Renoir, Sisley, Monet, and Cezanne; in fact Cezanne was so partial to Forain's work that he kept drawings pinned to the walls of his studio. Degas was a friend for over 50 years, and Toulouse-Lautrec was a fervent admirer. I've opened the backing to inspect. This print appears very clean, though the area inside the mat opening has lightly oxidized to an even tan cream color. It was laid down in contemporary times to a board (permanently affixed). The frame is contemporary and has a loss at corner and one other chip. Could be shipped without frame at slightly lower cost.
