This is a work squarely in the Hudson River style by a talented landscape artist of the second half of the century, DANIEL CHARLES GROSE (1838-1900). The scene is a significant river winding among steep green bluffs, a feathery tree at left, the only sign of the hand of man a split rail fence. Signed at lower left and dated there 1874, the work measures 8" by 12" (12 3/4" by 17" in its original attractive old gilded frame). The work is smoky and could benefit greatly from professional cleaning. There is an old patch on reverse corresponding to about a 1 1/2" old repaired cut in the sky at right above the mountain, and the canvas is a little loose, with stretcher bar show-through. None of this is unusual with a painting of this age. Grose, it is believed, was born in England, but spent time in Canada in the 1860's, and the Washington D.C. area in the 1870's and 1880's. Because many works hang in Canadian museums and are of Canadian scenes, it is thought that he might have painted there towards the end of his life. He was clearly a traveler, for his times; paintings are known of the Hudson River area and all over the northeastern United States; the Rocky Mountains; California; and, I see, there are some paintings of the 1880's of subjects in India. See the net for more images of Grose's paintings. SEE HUNDREDS OF OTHER WORKS OF ART NOW IN MY SHOP.
