This is a large and accomplished watercolor painting of a pedestrian-friendly, appealing street, (18" by 26 3/4", 24" by 44" framed) by the noted American watercolorist painter and much-loved art educator RUTH BADERIAN (1927-2010). From the names of the businesses in the scene, I was able to determine that the street scene is from Christiansted, St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands, in the Caribbean. Baderian, who passed away in 2010 in her eighties, was a familiar figure on the watercolor scene. She was a painter, evidently based in Long Island, New York, and also a beloved educator of those aspiring to excel in the difficult medium. She painted landscape, people, and floral still life works. A student at the Art Students League in New York, Baderian traveled later in life, painting scenes in Italy and elsewhere in Europe. Evidently, she also traveled to the Caribbean. This work appears to have been executed in the late 1960's or the early 1970's, judging from the exceedingly retro clothing and sunglasses on the woman at left. The work is in excellent condition. I will ship this without the nasty old fashioned non-glare glass, which often shatters in shipping. See the net for more examples of works in oil and watercolor by the artist.
