This is a very contemporary work, unframed, on a wood or masonite panel, 8 3/4" by 12", signed (incised) at lower right corner "EW" and dated there "01". The scene is a city street, depicted in rather bright color, in an impressionist technique; what is quite unusual here is the added medium used, the surface obviously having been worked with wax (I believe this might be called "encaustic" when used in a painting). The mix of the waxy material and the paint creates a quite modern surface and allows the artist significant opportunity for creative technique. I don't know who "EW" might be, but the talent is obvious. This work can be placed directly on the wall without a frame, the sides having been built up to a depth of nearly two inches, as seen in final photo. .
