Watercolor on pebbled old paper scene of a number of steam and sail craft in a calm harbor, " by " inside the mat, no glass, " by " framed, signed at lower left with initials "SAS". I think this is probably by a talented amateur artist but the scene is charming, with both steam and sail craft included in one image; so this probably dates from the late 1870's to about 1900. I believe that the artist was American and not European. The work has evenly browned, as can be seen from areas near the mat edges, where old mat lines show the original brighter color. This comes with the territory in old watercolors and is part of their antiquity. Affix this properly under the mat and add some glass and this will be good for another century of viewing. .
