In the style of an artist like Stark Davis is this 15 1/2" by 19 1/2" gouache painting, gold paint used for the background to the parrot and vegetation, possibly oleander, the work signed at lower left "O. Schroeter". This is a work dating to about the late 1930's to about 1950, by listed artist OTTO FELIX SCHROETER (born circa 1880 in Germany, died circa 1965 in California). Schroeter was possibly familiar with the works of Stark Davis, who painted such scenes in the first half of the century, or even Jessie Arms Botke, who created much more highly finished work in California, featuring exotic birds often against the gold backdrop. Schroeter moved to Illinois when he was approximately 14, where he worked for a calendar company. He was then employed by a major motion picture studio which brought him to California. Schroeter died in Los Angeles, California around 1965. The painting is in excellent condition, though there is some soiling under the glass and probably mat foxing and discoloration. Overall, a highly decorative piece. Allow for reflections in some images.
