Gouache on paper drawing of a Baltimore Oriole and a blue jay, 12 1/2" by 16" (23 3/4" by 28" framed), signed at lower right by the noted Disney illustrator AUGUST CURLEY LENOX (1908-1986). This is a really nicely executed work, in the style of an illustrator like Lynn Bogue Hunt or William Schaldach or Rex Brasher. Colors are vivid and the realism is such that the viewer can almost "hear" these birds. I suppose it could have been executed as a book or magazine illustration. Lenox was born in North Dakota, where, according to online information, he was fascinated by pirates and adventure. This childhood fascination led directly to the kind of art he created as an adult. He was a comic book illustrator for a time at Disney. Later he tended toward such subject matter as zoology/animals, adventure, space travel, cowboys and indians, and military history. Some Navy battle scenes he illustrated helped in the effort to sell the war bonds. This piece has a few condition issues, with spidery cracking of the old brittle board at upper left and at lower right, but the cracks don't seem to be that noticeable when one is focusing on the bird subjects. .
