Oil on old academy board painting, 9 1/8" by 12 1/4", of coastal cypress above the roiling waves, likely Monterey Peninsula and Carmel, circa 1935, signed at lower left by the well listed plein air artist EDDA MAXWELL HEATH (1874-1972). This is a fine example of plein air painting from the Carmel School, with impressionist brushwork, and pleasing greens and blues. On the reverse is written in pencil, likely by the artist herself, the title "Old Cypress", E.M. Heath, Price -- 40". Heath was born in Brooklyn and attended the New York School of Art and Pratt Institute. She studied with an impressive roster of famous artists-----William Merritt Chase, Robert Henri, Frank Du Mond, and Arthur Dove. By 1928 she was in Carmel, California painting primarily landscape and still life but she also painted portraits of Woodrow Wilson, William Howard Taft, and Theodore Roosevelt. Works sell at auctions of California paintings and fine dealers offer her works. Heath is listed in various encyclopedias and dictionaries of women artists and artists of the west. Her works are included in the collection of the Monterey Art Museum. The painting could benefit from a cleaning to remove yellowed varnish and to inpaint two tiny losses. A gold or possibly even silvery gilt plein air-style frame would look stunning on this work. .
