Circa 18th century ink on paper European drawing, 11 1/4" by 16 1/2" inside the inner framing enclosure, 24 1/2" by 29 1/2" as framed, the subject a coastal village with small boat landing, the tiny figures going about their lives on shore and in the boats, and a classic old sailing ship just making it into the image at left, signed in the lower left corner "Jac. A__". The drawing is on laid paper that was laid down on a board. Without glass, and of obvious great age, it has been subject to the effects of time, with old folds, rust spots, puckering of the paper especially in vertical center crease area, discoloration, browning, foxing, etc. I cannot connect the signature to a known artist, and I think the drawing is somewhat primitive in any event, probably not by a truly trained hand. Nevertheless it is indeed very old and antique, possibly I'm thinking even late 17th century; the figures at left seem as if taken from a cartouche of a 17th century copper engraved map. The frame is of much later time but it has an antique look too. The linen mat is foxed up and would need to be replaced so basically this would need to be taken to be framed properly, with glass and mat. It would make a fine addition to a classic style interior.
