Monotype on paper (where the artist "draws" the image on a sheet of glass, after which the glass plate is very carefully pressed against paper in order to produce an image), 5 3/8" by 7 7/8" (the image), the unframed sheet 7 3/4" by 9 1/2", signed in pencil at lower right margin by listed American artist MARION GRAY TRAVER (1892-1964). This a landscape in perhaps early spring or late fall, with muted pastel colors making for a harmonious and pleasing image. Traver was born in Elmhurst, New York and studied art with her father, George Traver. Over the decades she became best known for her oil paintings of New England winter landscape scenes. Traver was active from about 1918 to 1946 with the National Association of Women Artists. From 1925 to 1935 she exhibited at the National Academy, Brooklyn Museum, and Corcoran Gallery. A member of the Society of Independent Artists, she continued to work well into mid century. This little monotype is an excellent example of the technique. If you look carefully you can see the riffles of the wet paint as it dried on the paper. The upper right corner of the sheet, well out of the image area, is torn off and missing, but when framed this will of course not be noticeable. .
