Oil on canvas laid on old board of a country landscape with an apple tree at left and a split rail fence surrounding a clearing, 14" by 21 3/4" (18" by 26 1/4" as framed), apparently unsigned, but dated 1885 in the lower right corner. I feel the painting could be by a listed artist but the painting is not talking. The predominating greens and browns and the old gold frame make for a Hudson River style painting. The painting is soiled commensurate with its advanced age; a cleaning would be very beneficial---it would really brighten this up and bring out the colors. There is a small scrape at center left, showing as a white area. The frame has some wear, again commensurate with age. This is a pleasing work, probably of east coast origin, though with the apple tree I leave open the possibility of it being a Northern California painting. .
