Watercolor on paper painting, large size at 24" by 29" (33 3/4" by 39" framed), the subject three native American women riding on horseback through a bouldered landscape, the figures highlighted against a dark mountain background, signed in pencil at right by the popular western American artist and art educator GLEN EDWARDS (1942-). Note the fine detail in the figures and horses; the artist himself says that a "good drawing is the basis for a good painting". Edwards grew up in Idaho. Due to small physical stature he abandoned dreams of athletic glory, focusing instead on art education in order to develop natural skills he had exhibited since childhood. After some time at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, he went on to Utah State, where his academic career spanned 32 years. He is credited with having founded the Utah State art department. Edwards' background in advertising, illustration and graphic design is credited with strengthening his sense of color and composition. The artist's skills were featured in the July 1988 issue of Southwest Art magazine. He has since received widespread recognition, his works featuring historical scenes of cowboys, indians, hunters and horses now offered at fine art galleries throughout the intermountain west and Texas. Obsessed with historical accuracy, the artist is noted for his attendance at western pow-wows and mountain man re-enactment gatherings, where he takes copious amounts of photographs which eventually assist him in his painting. Many contemporary western American painters can claim to have studied under this fine artist and art educator. This example is in excellent fresh condition, the colors rich and unfaded. It seems that most of Edwards' works are oils, so this painting in watercolor is a rare opportunity to review his skills in that unforgiving medium. The painting is framed with Plexi, which should make for easier and safer shipping. Allow for reflections in some images. .
