Uncommonly exquisite, large original drawing in pastel, 25 1/2" by 19 1/2", 35 1/2" by 27 1/2" as professionally framed in bleached wood, signed at lower left and dated there '91 by the noted American artist LOU KOHL-MORGAN (1942-). Purchased recently in Portland, Maine, the work bears a gallery label from the Frick Gallery of Belfast, Maine. The title of the work is "Equinox". Frick Gallery on the central Maine coast was an active gallery in the late 1980's and early to mid 1990's. The artist by her own blog left Maine for Taos, New Mexico around that time, and only within the last two years or so returned to Maine. She is an accomplished artist with a long exhibition record. The nude we see here is beautifully drawn and positioned, and the seaside dreamy setting is superb. It appears as if the artist is very familiar with art of the Italian Renaissance, as the modeling is so reminiscent of that period in art history. I also see a little of the "Magic Realism" movement in this. Amazingly I don't see auction records for Kohl-Morgan's fine works. She appears to have focused on the human figure, and drawing, rather than painting in oil. This work is in excellent condition. The frame is a little off-kilter in the corners after its cross country journey to California. The new owner of this piece will be displaying a work sure to evoke praise from viewers. It is truly a pastel masterpiece. .
