Watercolor and ink on paper painting of a large mature tree in a landscape, 14" by 18" inside the mat, 22" by 25" overall in contemporary pleasant gold framing, titled at lower right "HORTUS LEIDEN GLINGKO TREE/RAPHAEL". The work is by the hand of the important impressionist painter JOSEPH MORRIS RAPHAEL (1869-1950). Raphael was born in Jackson, California, in the so-called Gold Country, but spent a lot of his time in the Low Countries of Europe, so both artistic communities "claim" him. He is considered a "foremost exponent of French impressionism". Raphael attended the School of Design in San Francisco under Arthur Mathews and Douglas Tilden. By 1902 he was in Paris studying under Laurens. Raphael painted in The Netherlands and Belgium settling in Uccle, Belgium for many years, seeking out local subject matter, be it landscape, still life, or genre. His palette in oil and watercolor often seems subdued; note the distinctive purples and greens in the present work. Raphael is considered a major artist and his paintings in oil have moved well into the six figure zone at auction. See the net for images of his beautiful works and more on his life. **Condition**: There is a roughly 3" long vertical tear in the heavy paper, at bottom center extending upwards, but, it is lost or at least overwhelmed in the busy design. .
