Watercolor on paper painting of two cowboys on horseback crossing a river or lake, 6 3/4" by 10" (13" by 15 1/2" as framed), signed at lower right by the noted Englishman who became a painter of western America, ROY KERSWILL (1925-2002). This is an exceptionally fresh watercolor, in excellent condition, which should please any collector of western Americana or western American art. The artist evidently gave this to friends as a gift, as the backing paper is marked "with best wishes to Frank & Evelyn/(signed) Roy Kerswill/7/24/87". Kerswill was born in Devon in western England and was in Canada by the 1940's with the Royal Navy, working his way from east to as far west as the Yukon. In 1950 he and a friend canoed from the northern plains down the Mississippi to New Orleans, the experience giving Kerswill a taste of pioneer life in the 19th century. Soon he was enraptured by Colorado, Wyoming and the Rocky Mountains region, making his home for many years in Denver and later in Jackson Hole, before passing away in Polson, Montana in 2002. Kerswill's paintings and watercolors, which usually feature rugged western mountain landscapes, populated by cowboys and mountain men, sell regularly at auctions of western American art.
