Large oil on heavy oak panel painting of an ornate cathedral interior, featuring the large organ, 35" by 29" (47" by 41" framed), titled on the reverse, dated there August 1916, and signed by the noted Czech painter FRANTISEK JELINEK (1890-1977). Jelinek's works have sold at auction in Europe, largely in the Czech Republic, where he is known as a painter of landscapes, nudes, and genre. It took me a while to figure out the name of the artist and the subject, and even the language (I thought this was Polish), but some time with google has enabled me to determine that this is in fact a view of the organ ("varhany") of the Kostel Jakuba cathedral in Prague. The painting was executed while Europe was at war in World War I. It is executed in oil on heavy oak panel. There is some cracking and paint loss along the vertical grain of the wood panel, as shown in a number of the photos.
