Watercolor and mixed media (ink, gouache) drawing, 8 1/4" by 10 1/4" (13 3/4" by 15 3/4" framed), titled on the reverse framing paper in the hand of the artist "David playing before King Saul", signed there and again at lower left by the well listed New York-California artist IRVING ALEXANDER BLOCK (1910-1986). There is an inscription in Hebrew at lower left near the signature. The subject and handling of the figures evokes Marc Chagall, Mane-Katz and other Jewish artists. Condition is very good with just some vertical rippling of the paper. Block was born in New York and attended the National Academy of Design and the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere. During the WPA and Federal Arts Project era he painted murals and created mosaics and bronze sculpture. A number of works that have come to light were presented through the Ankrum Gallery in Los Angeles, a significant avant-garde gallery there at mid century. See the net for more examples of the artist's work. .
