Oil on canvas, 20" by 24", 23 1/2" by 29" as framed, the subject a vase of orange flowers in a complex still life setting, an old timer wood dresser against the wall, other elements including books, smoker's pipe, ashtray, picture frame, tobacco can completing the scene. The painting is signed at lower left apparently "DAILEY" and is dated there "42". Also on the stretcher, faintly in white chalk, are the words " Still Dailey" (partly unreadable). I have researched the name and feel that this might well be a work of the Los Angeles area listed artist Lewis Warrington Dailey (1874-1957), a dentist who painted in his spare time. I cannot be certain but there is I think a good likelihood that this was the artist. The work has a real old-time WPA 1940's feel, with the arrangement, the cluttered space, and the handling, which includes scratching into the wet paint such as on the foreground green book. The painting is in good condition with exception of some missing paint at left center (near edge of dresser) and a smaller similar loss at bottom. Neither is serious. The frame is likely of the period or original. All in all this is a pleasant still life for the traditional home interior. .
