Miniature hand painted oil on canvas painting, 4 1/2" by 6" and 7 3/4" by 9 1/4" in a decorative yellow frame, the scene a capriccio (fantasy or generalized scene, a compilation of familiar elements perhaps of the artist's experience or imagination), of buildings with tiny figures in the scene for scale, executed in the late 20th century for the tourist trade, in the style or manner of the famous Italian 18th century old master artist Francesco Guardi. Guardi's best works sell for millions at auction, and his style and that of his brother Giacomo are quite recognizable. Since their day, artists have imitated their poetic style, as there has been a steady demand for the traditional scenes executed in muted colors. This little painting probably came to America in the luggage of a traveler. It's beautifully painted. Over the years it has acquired a little wear in the form of a light dimple/bowing/buckling of the canvas at left (exaggerated for the sake of showing it), adding to an appearance of great age. This would be perfect for the little wall on the staircase or landing or dressing area. .
