VARNETTE P. HONEYWOOD (1950-2010) pencil signed print by important African-American artist
The offered work is a prize for the collector of African-American art. VARNETTE P. HONEYWOOD, (1950-2010) was an important artist, known for her upbeat, colorful acrylic paintings and collages featuring African-Americans going about daily life in familiar settings. Influenced by the likes of William H. Johnson, Romare Bearden, Samella Lewis, Jacob Lawrence and Elizabeth Catlett, Honeywood continued a long tradition of excellence in black American art. Raised in California, she returned regularly to her roots in the American South, in Mississippi, for inspiration. She studied fine art at Spelman College in Atlanta and received a masters at the University of Southern California. Honeywood came to the attention of entertainer Bill Cosby and his wife. Creating a line of greeting cards at the time, her career was boosted by the exposure provided when Cosby included her paintings in the living room of the Huxtable house on "The Cosby Show". She went on to collaborate with Cosby by illustrating a series of children's books. Honeywood's work was included in the prestigious and important collection of the Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company, a major black-owned corporation in Los Angeles. That collection was auctioned in recent years. A recent art auction at Swann Galleries in New York featured property owned by Honeywood. This print, unframed and measuring 25" by 25", is signed in pencil at bottom right margin and is dated there '79. It is titled at lower left margin "Rap Sheet". Condition is very good, with just some mat-related browning lines in the margins and at extreme lower portion of the image. The photos were taken while the art was in a protective heavy plastic sleeve; the actual colors are more intense than would be suggested by the present images. Shipping wizard figures are guesstimates. This might be shippable in a tube, rolled....to be determined. See the net for much more information on this African-American artist.
