By the noted California artist FRANK MOSS HAMILTON (1930-1999) is this gouache on paper painting, 11 1/4" by 15 1/2" inside the frame, 19" by 23 1/2" framed, signed at lower right by the artist and titled there "December Snow". Hamilton was a highly talented master of realistic painting, sometimes in oil but perhaps more impressively in gouache or tempera or casein type media. This is a typical example of his work, the subject classic, eastern-looking barns in the quiet of December, everything apparently asleep for a somber winter's day. Hamilton's style is very consistent and quickly recognizable. There are many reproduction prints of his work but I have been lucky enough to own several originals over the years. Some time back I owned a larger piece, with the stone buildings in fine detail, in the autumn. Hamilton also traveled to Asia and sometimes one encounters his works from those travels. This example just came out of an Orange County estate, where it was the property of a 94 year old woman. Condition is excellent, with some wear on the circa 1960's or early 1970's frame. .
