One of three works in my shop by the same artist, F. KENWOOD GILES of Bermuda, is this watercolor on paper painting, 18" by 22" (the largest of the three works) inside the mat, 26" by 30" as framed, (no glass and frame loose), the subject a white-roofed island homes on a finger of land bordered by water on several sides, flowering shrubs, coconut palms, a few pines or cedars, a meandering unpaved road and some small boats in the harbor completing the happy scene. The paintings are not dated, but I would guess they would have been created in the 1940's or 1950's. To date I have not located biographical information on the obviously talented artist. He does not seem to be officially "listed" in standard reference books, but there are online records of his works having sold at auction. He appears to have been active between the 1920's and the late 1960's, principally as an illustrator. There are posters for Australian and New Zealand fruit producers, others for the war effort in England, and some political cartoons. I think he was English though there is some suggestion online that he was Australian. So perhaps down the road we will know more about this artist, as the scholarship is improving all the time. He has really caught the feeling of the island in this drawing and the two others. Condition is not quite as good as the other two, with some past moisture exposure resulting in some streaky and mottled, uneven browning in the sky, visible especially as a horizontal lighter area in the sky at left (see photo). The frame is simple, white wood, with slight wear. Allow for reflections in glass. .
