Ink on rice type paper, approximately 13" by 11" inside the mat, the subject appearing to be a child, with a bird above, signed at lower right "Serisawa" in ballpoint, inscribed "To Gertrude & Jim from Sueo" at lower left in ballpoint. This is an example of the artistry of the American-Japanese artist SUEO SERISAWA (1910-2004). Serisawa is considered to be one of the principal figures in California modernism. Born in Yokohama, Japan, the son of an artist, he was in Long Beach, California as a boy. After some dislocation to New York and other areas during the anti-Japanese sentiment of the Second World War years, he returned to Los Angeles and became a well known artist and teacher. Serisawa's work spans many "isms"------regionalism, expressionism, impressionism.............and his work can be abstraction, finely finished still lifes, portraits, figurative. The artist taught at Scripps, Laguna Beach, and Palm Springs, working into old age, passing away in 2004 in his mid 90's. Today his paintings and prints appear at auction in California and elsewhere. This piece is not dated but likely dates to the 1960's or 1970's. Condition: generally very good; there's a slight tear at lower left near the inscription, due to the corner being taped to the mat----past pressure on that corner has resulted in a slight tear in the extremely thin, delicate paper (see photos, front and rear). There are a few handling creases as well in the center (see photos).
