Oil on canvas impressionistic seascape with rocks painting, 23 1/2" by 31 1/2", unframed, signed at lower right by the well known painter of seascapes on both coasts, PAUL DOUGHERTY (1877-1947). Dougherty was a specialist in the coastal scene, and oils have exceeded $20,000 at auction. He is known for a highly impressionist style, and this work is no exception. The fairly calm sea is painted in many, many brushstrokes of many subtle colors. The artist painted a lot in California and in New England locales like Maine (and Monhegan Island there), but works from Europe are also encountered. CONDITION: there are some edge losses from frame abrasion, especially at lower left and extreme lower right, and a small abrasion/paint loss in upper right quadrant. Under UV there is some scattered touch up in upper portion and two touched up areas on rocks in lower center. See the net for more information on the artist. .
