Very subtle and elegant oil on canvas, 24 1/2" by 30" (27 1/2" by 33 1/2" as framed) signed at lower right by listed Midwest artist MARY C. PETERSON and dated "31", showing an Asian inspired still life scene in monochromatic minimalist tones of beige, gray and tan. The artist added just a spot of color at lower left where two iris are in full flower. This is a particularly easy to live with painting---I enjoyed it on my wall for quite some time. It bears an old label on the reverse: "THE ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO AMERICAN PAINTINGS AND SCULPTURE FORTY-FIFTH ANNUAL EXHIBITION". Written in is the title "Realization" and the price, $500.00, as well as the artist's address. The artist's estate was purchased in the late 1970's by Campanile Galleries Inc. of Chicago. Peterson displayed her works at the Chicago WPA Art Gallery on Erie Street in the late 1930' and early 1940's. CONDITION: the painting could benefit from a cleaning, attention to a small pressure dent at left, and investigation of some possible old inpaint in the field at upper left. A drip of some kind of foreign substance is visible in the center, appearing as a whitish streak in the images. The old original frame is in excellent condition. E
