Oil on fine weave canvas, 9" by 12" plus narrow wood frame, the subject various pitchers and other objects, painted in the typical style of the artist, and signed at lower right by French-American painter ANDRE GISSON (GITTELSON). The cool stillness of the scene takes from the still life works of the great modern master Giorgio Morandi. Gisson was a highly prolific but very talented artist in the impressionist tradition, and his paintings of street scenes, landscapes, people and still life appear regularly at many auction houses in Europe and the United States. His paintings are quickly recognizable by virtue of their gauzy, diaphanous white atmosphere, and this has no doubt made them popular in the age of shabby chic. Some have reached the high four figures at auction. This piece is relatively smaller in comparison to most of his works, and the condition has suffered. There is paint loss in a considerable portion of the composition (largely along the stretcher bar interfaces), so this will need professional restoration attention; there is also general soiling, a bit of foreign matter, and so forth. Study photos closely. It is currently loose in its frame. See the net for many more examples by the artist. .
