Oil on canvas, 28" by 20", unframed, the subject a holy man or rabbi in traditional clothing intently studying a religious book, signed at lower right in Hebrew letters "Israel", and further signed at lower left "YUAV" or something like that. There might also be some Hebrew script on the reverse of the canvas. The work probably dates to circa the 1960's. It could benefit from cleaning as there is some soiling and pretty much no varnish. There are a few minor abrasions, a liner one inch tear at lower right center to the left of the signature and a similar puncture at extreme upper left. If you're just looking for a traditional Jewish or Israeli subject to be viewed at a distance, you could just frame it and enjoy it as-is. .
