This is a most unusual and appealing pop art painting (unframed, 27" by 35") by a mid-coast California living artist, Tom Shultz. Works by the artist have been exhibited at a number of galleries, particularly in the Paso Robles area of central California. It is painted (not silkscreened, which I at first thought a possibility) on a soft pulpboard, which the artist has also painted on the reverse (an abstract). The painting appears to likely date to the year 1984. The person from whom I acquired it said it ended up in her possession after the artist's storage unit was liquidated years ago for failure to pay rent. Eventually she was able to contact him about it, and he signed it for her in the lower right corner at that time. Note the driver's license "signature" is also the artist. And the image, I gather, is of Rock Hudson! The artist's style apparently changes with the wind, and he now paints soothing landscapes, after a period in which he painted cars in paintings. According to his own telling, eventually the cars stopped appearing in the landscapes completely. So, the artist has had a number of different styles to his work over the years. Condition: Edges have some crumbly losses and there is some moisture staining and foxing---the painting has likely been stored in damp conditions over the years---see photos. Hang this on your wall and you're assured of an interesting conversation piece that will surely grab the attention of your guests!! .
