BRUCE McGREW (1937-1999) Southwest American art large desert landscape watercolor painting by Arizona master artist
Watercolor on quality, heavy watercolor paper, 22" by 29 1/2" (29" by 36 1/4" in its contemporary bleached oak style frame), signed at lower right in pencil "McGrew", no date but likely 1970's or 1980's. This is one of the sought-after works of Kansas-born Arizona artist and art educator BRUCE McGREW (1937-1999). McGrew was born in Wichita. He became known in the Tucson area for his impressionist landscapes but also created figurative works. A beloved member of the faculty at the University of Arizona for several decades, he was an influential figure in the local art community. A retrospective about fifteen years ago was one of the best-attended exhibitions in the history of the university. McGrew sadly passed away at age 61 from cancer, cutting short a distinguished career in the arts. The watercolor is in excellent, fresh condition. The paper bears a "HAND MADE" watermark (I believe that's what the first word says). I've removed this from the glass which would make for difficult and dangerous shipping so it would be sent in just the frame and mat (to which it is hinged at top).
