More from Jon Berg Fine Arts and More
Oil on canvas wrapped on board, 7 1/2" by 9 1/2" (10 3/8" by 12 3/8" as framed), signed at lower right (difficult to photograph since it's so small) "Rider" and further bearing an inscription on an old label on the frame, "Still Life Study/by Charles Joseph Rider/82_ Merwin/Los Angeles, and "Owned by /Mrs Charles Joseph/Rider". Rider was a familiar name to the Los Angeles art community early in the century. A student of William Merritt Chase and Stanton MacDonald-Wright, he was a commercial artist for some time, and later an instructor. The Los Angeles Art League records show that by the year 1930, Rider was teaching, in San Pedro:
"The Art Students' League of San Pedro holds a six-week summer session at the Point Firmin Community Hall. The instructors are Albert Henry King, James Redmond, Earnford Schonhoft, Boris Deutsch, John Hinchman, Edouard Vysekal, Lorser Feitelson, John Hubbard Rich, Mabel Alvarez, Henri de Kruif, Barse Miller, and Charles Joseph Rider". Those who follow California art will certainly recognize many of those names. There does not seem to be a lot of information available on the artist, but clearly he was skilled and trained. CONDITION: Clearly this work needs clearning, varnish, and some touch up to the missing areas, which appear principally as white patches in the fruit. The vintage frame has a few small corner losses and one at bottom. .
