Oil on canvas, 24" by 24" and a narrow simple frame, signed by the artist in an Indian language (Devanagari) at lower right and dated there also in Devanagari 1967, the subject a young woman in decorative traditional garb, a village house in the background. The title, written faintly on the reverse, is "Village Maiden". Written in dark marker on the stretcher, evidently at a much later date, is, again "VILLAGE MAIDEN", "THE ARTIST: A. A. ALMELKAR" " and "Collected: July 18. 1992- by (and then the address sticker of a local Los Angeles couple. The artist's works have sold to at least $19,000 at auction (Sotheby's New York), and others have been offered in India over $25,000. I do not currently have any biographical information available. The painting is in excellent condition and is ready for the wall. .
