For the collector of modern and mid century art, here is an interesting work from the year 1947. The highly modern painting of a green apple, blue pitcher and red and white diamond patterned cloth in a rather two dimensional and "airless" space is obviously the work of an accomplished artist. It is painted in oil on canvas, (unframed), the measurements being 32" by 11", and the artist, HENRI WORMSER (1909-) signed it at lower right in capital letters. Wormser is listed and there are some auction records, mainly in Europe. On the stretcher is written "Madeleine Gekiere/(Mrs. Paul Potter)/CA. 1945-50/116 E. 31st St. NYC". This woman, a quite well known painter, illustrator and filmmaker herself, (see askart and other information on the net) was apparently a former owner of the painting, which I found in Portland, Maine. Condition: There is some flaking, unstable paint in the pitcher and along the edges of the work----nothing that couldn't be handled by a good restorer. Framed perhaps in black, this would make a striking work against a white wall of your mid century or retro interior.
