Oil on canvas laid on board, 12 1/4" by 9 3/4" (17" by 14" as framed), unsigned, the subject a sunny balcony near the ocean. This is a circa 1920's to 1940's work, I would imagine, judging from the overall handling and the frame. It's a shame that the artist didn't sign the piece because he or she was obviously talented and understood impressionism. The shadows are violet, not black. This was found in Pasadena so we would tend to assume it's a California work, and the red tile-looking roofing would tend to support that theory. This could well be a Laguna Beach school painting by someone known, but it would be hard to prove. Condition is good, with some pinpoint losses in the flowers, and a bit of loss at extreme upper left corner. Some touch up of these areas and a cleaning would be desirable. Frame is of the period and shows some wear consistent with its age. The painting and frame would work well in an Arts and Crafts setting. .
