Watercolor on heavy paper, 19" by 15 1/4" (28" by 24" as framed), the subject a California quail perched on a bleached snag in a vaguely defined, arid looking mountain landscape. The work is signed at lower right "MUGGS VAN SANT", and is not dated. I've searched online and have found a reference to Muggs Van Sant; apparently he was an athlete in track and football at UC Berkeley, circa 1930, and there's a reference to him, important California watercolor artist Millard Sheets and others relaxing and painting at a Kona coast, (Hawaii Big Island) house in the 1940's and 1950's. So, I think it likely that Van Sant was a painting buddy of Sheets. Obviously he was himself quite talented, as this work would indicate. Also, Muggs' son Tom Van Sant is a highly recognized painter today as well---see his website. Most certainly the work and career of the father, Muggs, is worthy of further research. The painting is in excellent condition and it is ready for the wall. .
