Ink on stiff paper drawing, 11 3/4" by 9 5/8", signed at lower right "O. R. Shattuck --1917--" and in the lower right margin "LIVE OAK, FLA. FEB. 1917". The subject is a boy or young man, possibly a black man, in a small canoe-like boat, deep in the heart of a classic southern cypress swamp, the Spanish Moss hanging form the trees and brush. The signature could less likely read "Shalhuck" or Shahuck" or "Shaltuck", but, no matter, there does not appear to be a listing for this name. Found recently in central New Hampshire, I am offering it as an interesting vintage piece of regional southern American art. Certainly, Florida art has its own group of collectors and they might well find this little piece to be quite interesting. The paper has browned, and rippled a bit; this causes the camera to see things a bit deviated from reality. There are two very small areas that are whiter than their surroundings, (at upper left for example), but they do not stand out to the naked eye as the camera would suggest; likewise the browning is more even than the camera would lead one to believe. There is a very simple, inexpensive and unflattering frame that could go with this if desired. SEE HUNDREDS OF WORKS NOW IN MY RUBY LANE SHOP.
