Oil on canvas, somewhat spontaneous and sketchy image of a formally dressed couple at a social event, circa "fin de siecle", 14" by 10 3/4" (20" by 17" as framed), signed at lower right with the distinctive signature of French early to mid century artist YVES DIEY (1892-1984). Diey is well known in France particularly, where his pastels and oil paintings of nude, or semi-clothed attractive women, sometimes in exotic settings, make frequent appearances at public auction. Diey was part of the modern figurative movement in France. A prolific artist, he produced drawings, oils and signed limited edition prints. Oddly, the consistent quality of his work notwithstanding, there does not seem to be much biographical information on him. This example likely dates from a later period in his life, perhaps circa 1960's, as the paper label affixed to the framing suggests such a date, and the canvas likely dates to that period as well. The subject matter however is of a earlier period, so this is most definitely a work of nostalgia. Condition is excellent, save for a few scattered brown spots of spattered foreign matter that should be easily removed. See the net for more images of Diey's works. .
