Oil on canvas landscape of country cottages and feathery trees on the banks of a small pond or marsh, 9" by 12" (13" by 21" in its modern frame), signed at lower right "S. Clark", the subject given on the framing label as "On the Arun--Sussex". This is a painting by SAMUEL JOSEPH CLARK (1834-1912), a noted 19th century painter of rural landscapes and genre. I see one auction record over $8,000 for a large, exceptional example, but even smaller, less impressive works bring to about $2,000 at auction. This piece, found recently in Maine, has suffered some abuse in its long lifetime, and it needs to be relined and restored. There is a one inch or so thinned area at left center which is basically a hole, a poorly inpainted (gray blob, basically) area at center right and a crudely painted in area at lower center extending in from the water's edge, craquelure in the sky, and small paint losses in the cottage and trees. Fixed up, this will be a piece of 19th century art well worth saving. .
