Watercolor on paper, 8 1/2" by 17 1/2" inside the mat (13 1/2" by 22 1/2" in its very nice circa 1920 vintage frame), signed at lower right and inscribed there "Munich" by the well listed American artist CHARLES PAUL GRUPPE (1860-1940). The subject is a creek or small lake or pond at sunset. Born in Ontario, Canada, Gruppe was in Europe by age 20, where he explored France, Germany and Holland. I imagine that this work would date to that early 1880's period when he would have been in Germany. The artist liked the village of Katwyk aan Zee in Holland, and settled there for twenty years, achieving recognition with collectors, including the Dutch royal family and other European royalty, for his tonalist and impressionistic paintings of the people and landscapes of that part of Europe. Gruppe did find himself back in Rochester, New York in 1896, when his son Emile, soon to become a highly regarded artist in his own right, was born. The family returned to Holland but by 1909 returned to the United States in advance of the gathering war clouds. In the U.S., he continued to paint prolifically but also became a dealer and broker in Dutch paintings, introducing and promoting them to collectors. By 1925 he had discovered artist-friendly Cape Ann, Massachusetts, where he remained until his passing in 1940. CONDITION: The work is very clean. When I removed it from the frame for photography, I found that it was laid down on an old board long ago. The vintage frame has a little wear but goes well with the art. See the net for much more on the artist and his artistically inclined family (his four children all were artistically gifted, and members of the family still paint). .
